Kabir Shahriar, a Tokyo Tech and ToTAL alumnus, spoke in Japanese about his job-hunting activities at the “2nd Doctoral Career Seminar: Senior Tokyo Tech Doctoral Students\u2018 Talk about \u2018My Career Design\u2019” held on December 1, 2023, at the Ookayama Campus.

Kabir Shahriar completed the doctoral course in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, School of Engineering, and also ToTAL in March of this year, and is currently working for Ricoh Company, Ltd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This seminar was organized by the Tokyo Tech Advanced Human Resource Development Fellowship for Doctoral Students Office and co-sponsored by the Student Support Center and the Innovator and Inventor Development Platform (IIDP) of Tokyo Tech, as a valuable opportunity to hear directly from senior Tokyo Tech doctoral graduates who have gone on to diverse careers in the private sector, academia and entrepreneurship. In addition to Kabir, four others spoke and answered questions from participants.

In his talk titled “The Unexplored Path – For Those Who Want to Do Something Different from University Research,” Kabir shared his experiences and thoughts in the following categories: 1) what he felt and did while at Tokyo Tech, 2) what he feels after joining a company, and 3) what students can prepare before job-hunting activities.

– Anxieties, etc. he felt during master\u2019s and doctoral degree programs and issues that he faced during job-hunting
– How he ended up thinking to work for a company in Japan

– Differences between research at university and work in a company
– What is expected of him in the workplace and his current goals<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(3) What students can prepare before job-hunting activities
– What doctoral students should do in advance of job-hunting
– Tools and events useful for job-hunting that can be utilized at Tokyo Tech (Innovator and Inventor Development and Matching System (IDM), Dr\u2019s K-meet and such)
– Message to junior students

– It was very informative to hear from seniors of various ages and industries who are actually active in society.
– I learned that there are various career options after obtaining a doctoral degree.
– I was able to learn about what I should think about during my doctoral period, the mindset I should have, the timing of job hunting, possible career paths, and the strengths of doctoral students in job-hunting.
