Report
On January 17th, we had the honour of welcoming Ms. Oleksandra Matviichuk to speak on leadership in crisis situations for the Global Leadership Café lecture series. Ms. Matviichuk is a Ukrainian lawyer and human rights defender who is also the head of the Center for Civil Liberties (CLL), which received the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize. She also coordinated the Euromaidan SOS initiative and is the Vice-President of the International Federation for Human Rights. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Ms. Matviichuk has been active in campaigning for Ukrainian civil rights, with a focus on war crimes and human rights. She has also called for creation of a special hybrid tribunal to investigate the war crimes associated with the Russian invasion.

Ms. Oleksandra Matviichuk
For the Global Leadership Café, Ms. Matviichuk began by outlining her work as a civil rights advocate in Ukraine. Hearing about the atrocities endured by Ukrainians was incredibly emotional, and her pain was evident as she detailed her work over the last two years. She explained the importance of their work documenting the war crimes committed, and how this is an essential component to ensuring that Russia is held accountable for their violence in Ukraine.
Following her talk, Ms. Matviichuk answered questions from attendees, moderated by Marcello Gecchele and Taren Ginter (both ToTAL students). These questions ranged from her experience of receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, to her opinions on what can be done to stop the war, and even how Japan could be involved to further support Ukraine. Her answers were thoughtful and shared insights into how everyday leadership becomes essential in times of crisis. She emphasized that in times of true crisis, people are desperate for hope and thus leadership emerges and is recognized more prominently. Ms. Matviichuk reiterated the importance of believing in our own power. In her own awe-inspiring words, “Change is brought on by a massive mobilization of ordinary people doing extraordinary things.”
