Outline/Introduction
At Tokyo Tech Academy for Leadership (ToTAL), we are honored to invite Dr. Curtiss Takada Rooks from Loyola Marymount University, CA, USA, to have a short talk on the topic “Navigating Multicultural Identities as a Leader in Academia” for about 20-30 minutes and answer any questions from the audience as long as time permits on Monday, October 21 at 12:30-13:20. The entire event will be held in English.
It will be held both in person and online.

I never imagined myself as an academic or a scholar. This talk explores who my life live “different normal” led me to becoming a Global Asia and Critical Mixed Race/Roots Teacher-Scholar.

About Dr. Curtiss Takada Rooks

Curtiss Takada Rooks, Ph.D. is a critical race and ethnic studies scholar in Asian and Asian American Studies at Loyola Marymount University where his courses include multiracial identity and contemporary issues in APIA communities.
His research examines multiracial identity, along with engaged scholarship addressing civic engagement and BIPOC community health and wellness.
Since September 2022 until August 2023, Dr. Takada Rooks is serving as a Visiting Associate Professor/Teaching Fellow and First Rate, Inc. Academic Fellow teaching courses in Asian American Studies, mixed roots and transnational identity.
Born at Camp Zama in Kanagawa, Japan to an African American father and native Japanese mother, Curtiss has lived in mainland Japan, Okinawa and throughout the US.
He now lives in Culver City, CA with his sansei wife Miki and daughter Mariko. As a family, they are active in the Los Angeles area Japanese American community.
Additionally, Dr. Rooks serves as an advisor and facilitator of the Japan–Black LA Initiative that works to enhance the relationship between Japan and the LA African
American community.
Curtiss holds a doctorate in Comparative Culture: cultural anthropology emphasis from the University of California, Irvine, a M.A. in Public Policy from Trinity College and an A.B. in
Economics/A.B. in Asian Studies from Dartmouth College.
