On March 22, 2024, at the Workshop Room of Taki Plaza, we welcomed Dr. Sasipa Boonyubol, lecturer of School of Environment and Society, as a facilitator, and held a free screening of the documentary film “PICTURE A SCIENTIST” to celebrate the “International Women’s Day” officially recognized by the United Nations. A casual discussion was held after the screening.

PICTURE A SCIENTIST (released in 2020) featured in the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries – including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists – who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.

During the discussion, students, faculty, and staff who participated in the event shared their own experiences of discrimination and harassment, as well as how to communicate effectively with others across gender, language, culture, age, and other barriers in their research and work. The participants engaged in a rich exchange of ideas.
